Demo Day was August 4, 2-5pm

Caltech Cahill Hameetmen Auditorium

On Summer App Space Demo Day, each team of four students and one teacher presents their projects solving real-world Space Apps Challenges to the Caltech community and a panel of industry experts. Demo Day Judges award prizes (laptops running Linux) to student members of the best team.

3:45pm-4:30pm Demo Day Keynote Speaker: Dr. Colleen Lewis, Professor of Computer Science at Harvey Mudd College, Judges Deliberate

Dr. Colleen Lewis is a professor of computer science at Harvey Mudd College who specializes in computer science education. Lewis researches how people learn computer science and how people feel about learning computer science. Her research seeks to identify effective teaching practices for creating equitable learning spaces where all students have the opportunity to learn. Lewis curates CSTeachingTips.org, a NSF-sponsored project for disseminating effective computer science teaching practices.

Demo Day Judges

Max Kanter, Chief Executive and co-founder at Saturate

Max’s lifelong obsession with the weather first inspired Saturate. He credits his desert upbringing in Scottsdale, Arizona with deepening both his appreciation for water and his fascination with plant life. Max has previously served as Marketing Manager and Co-City Lead at Good Eggs LA, Marketing and Volunteer manager at Food Forward, LA’s largest food rescue organization and GIS Field Technician at Global Water Solutions. He has a BA in Geography from Middlebury College.

Kellie Spears, Software Engineer at Procore Technologies

Kellie Spears is an iOS Mobile Engineer at Procore Technologies. She is responsible for all aspects of software development including: design, coding, participating in onsite or virtual meetings with customers, and working with QA to ensure the highest quality standards of Procore’s products. Kellie develops features based on project needs, and strives to continuously improve product usability, performance, and increase offline capabilities. Kellie has a B.S. in Computer Science from Spelman College.

Yaron Biner, co-founder MEET, Redbeacon

Yaron splits his time between trying to build products that people love and bringing together Palestinian and Israeli youth in his home country of Israel as part of Middle East Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow (which he co-founded 13 years ago). After getting his Bachelor’s degree in CS from MIT and working as a Product Manager at Google, Yaron co-founded Redbeacon, which aimed to change how consumers find and book home services and was sold to Home Depot. Yaron is currently working on his next startup.

Sarah Gavit,  Assistant Director for Engineering and Science at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)

Sarah Gavit is currently the Assistant Director for Engineering and Science at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).  She has over 30 years of engineering and management experience in planetary exploration.  Previous assignments at JPL Include serving as the Project Manager for the Dawn mission and the Deep Space 2 Mars Microprobe Project, the Project System Engineer for the Prometheus and Kepler missions, the Fault Protection System Engineer for the Cassini mission, and as the Mars System Sterilization Study Lead.   Early in her career at Martin Marietta, Sarah was a mission and system engineer for the Magellan mission to Venus.  She also operated her own business as a  private consultant to NASA for spacecraft system engineering and project management, and frequently serves on Technical, Management and Cost panels for space mission evaluations.   Sarah graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with both a Bachelor and Master of Science degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering.
