Application Selection

Grounds for Rejection:

  • students who claim high competency+are late in their school career but don’t do well in programming section (Keyword: clue/C)
  • Did not even manage to interview (Keyword: interview/I)
  • An experienced interviewer vetoed (Keyword: reject/R)
  • Students who aren’t excited about program or about working with instructors. (Keyword: passion/P)
  • students who are very logistically challenged (Keyword: logistic/L)
  • teachers who don’t convince us of technical ability, students who convince us that they won’t be teachable in this regard (Keyword: Technical/T)
  • students who are not creative/comfortable or who are combative in interview (Keyword: communication/C)
  • students who can’t make the schedule (Keyword: Schedule/S)
  • if ? is entered in this column, student/teacher goes onto the next round. if ? + Accept is entered, would ideally like this student to be shoe-in for next round

Bins for reviewing those who aren’t rejected (1 low, 2 middle, 3 high), ideally equal distribution

  • school has potential to change course of student’s life student? 
  • student has programming experience?
  • student has grit? 
  • student has career ambitions in field?
  • student’s age?
  • student’s high school?

Application Passes

  1. First pass: read interviewer private notes, interviewer accept/reject, student passion for working with interviewer, and listen to beginning of audio and skim audio. Goal with first pass: see if any of the below grounds for rejection hold, and begin to sort those who aren’t rejected into bins,
  2. Second pass: for those who were not rejected on below grounds review initial application answers to answer questions here, and listen to full audio. Some students from second pass will enter into reject pile here for grounds Try to sort effectively into bins, and produce ranking
  3. Third pass: for those final students in the ranking, unmask and modify bins as needed/swap students. Hoping for diversity numbers to match applications after unmasking.  Come up with final list of 12.

Final tasks

  • Sort into 12 students and waitlist
  • Analyze distribution of final interviewees demographics, compare with results of selections and distribution of original interviewees
